CHAPTER 1: RED TIP GREEN FLASH The stenciling on the crate lid was wrong. Corporal James Mitchell ran his thumb across the wet pine. Standard .30 carbine crates carried black block lettering: LOT 42-B, FRANKFURT ARSENAL. This lid had a raw red stroke slapped across the wood. No lot number. Just a three-letter code—T3-I—stamped over […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF BRASS The brass felt too long. James Donovan rolled a single cartridge between his thumb and index finger. Standard .45 ACP sat stubby in the palm, heavy with lead and soft jacket alloy. This was different. The casing stretched a quarter-inch longer than it should have, capped not with a […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF CEDAR The voice had the texture of crushed glass dragged across slate. “That monstrosity,” she said, her tongue flicking out to catch a smear of white powdered sugar from her upper lip, “is coming down by Friday. If it’s not gone, I will have it torn down myself and bill […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF STONE The leather of the steering wheel was already warm against my palms, but the air inside the cab felt thin, stripped of oxygen by the suddenness of the stop. Two hundred yards behind me, the boundary fence of my property cut a straight, unforgiving line through the morning mist, […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF COLD CERAMIC The coffee in the mug had stopped steaming three minutes ago, leaving a flat, dark skin across the surface that mirrored the gray asphalt of the driveway. Mark Thorne did not drink it. He held the ceramic cylinder with both hands, his thumbs tracking the micro-fractures in the […]
CHAPTER 1: THE FIRST INCURSION The sun beat down through the humid South Carolina canopy, turning the air into a shimmering, malevolent mirage that clung to the skin like a wet wool blanket. At the edge of the property line, the two river-stone columns stood completed—four feet tall, three feet square, mortared with the quiet, […]
CHAPTER 1: THE FIRST LOCK The heavy wrought iron gate had stood for thirty years, a quiet sentinel bolted into granite posts that my father had helped set with his own calloused hands. Now, it wore a crown of industrial-grade steel and a thick, rust-colored chain that caught the low glare of the afternoon sun […]
CHAPTER 1: THE FIRST NOTICE AND THE THREAT AT SUNSET The sound of the rusted metal voice still hung in the heavy afternoon air, vibrating against the newly galvanized steel of the lattice structure. Jack did not blink. He kept his weight balanced on the balls of his feet, his gaze locked onto the floral-print […]
CHAPTER 1: THE TENSION OF THE LINE The sun had not yet cleared the high ridge of oaks behind the barn, leaving the northern pasture in a flat, desaturated shadow. John stood with his weight balanced evenly over his boots, hands tucked deep into the pockets of his canvas work jacket. The canvas was stiff […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WRECKAGE AND THE COLD ASSESSMENT The boots sank half an inch into the damp Virginia loam, right at the edge of the hundred-year-old barn’s eastern foundation. Jack didn’t look down. His gaze remained locked upward, tracing the jagged silhouette where thirty kilowatts of state-of-the-art silicon had rested less than twenty-four hours ago. […]
