CHAPTER 1: THE IGNITION CHALLENGE The concrete floor of Hangar 7 was cold, the kind of deep, alkaline chill that bit through the thin rubber soles of Diana’s worn sneakers. She didn’t look up immediately. Her hands, rough from twelve weeks of industrial soap and the abrasive twine of heavy mops, maintained their rhythmic grip […]
CHAPTER 1: The Weight of Clay The spade did not click; it thudded. The iron of the blade struck something that lacked the hollow ring of limestone or the soft give of rotting oak roots. Walter Hensley stopped. He did not lean on the hickory handle—his lower spine had passed the age where leaning offered […]
CHAPTER 1: THE THRESHOLD The marble foyer of the university president’s mansion was designed to intimidate, its vaulted ceiling swallowing the sounds of the arriving elite. I stood in my Navy blue dress uniform, the fabric stiff and coarse against skin that had grown accustomed to the soft, worn cotton of a janitor’s work shirt. […]
CHAPTER 1: The Weight of Steel The C-130 cargo bay was a tomb of pressurized silence, vibrating with the rhythmic, bone-jarring hum of turbines that sounded exactly like the screaming of an engine failing at altitude. Cora sat on a jump seat that felt like sitting on a block of ice. She didn’t move. She […]
CHAPTER 1: The Weight of Recognition The door to the communications hub clicked shut, sealing out the hum of the base. Emily sat at the terminal, her fingers resting lightly on the cold, plastic keys. Her name was etched into the door frame in her mind, a ghost of the girl who had spent eight […]
CHAPTER 1: THE FOURHOUR MILE The dawn over Arlington did not break with color; it seeped into the landscape, a grey wash that turned the rows of white markers into bone-white teeth biting into the earth. Olivia sat in her sedan, the blue and white waitress uniform still clinging to her skin. Her name tag, […]
CHAPTER 1: The Weight of Iron The generator outside the GP tent groaned, a mechanical stutter that bled into the rhythmic scraping of folding chairs against the packed dirt floor. To Corporal Tyler Briggs, the tent was a stage, and he was currently the lead actor in a drama about propriety. To Walter Harland, it […]
CHAPTER 1: The Weight of Steel The afternoon sun hung low, a jaundiced eye peering through the smog, casting long, sharp shadows across the cracked asphalt of the supermarket parking lot. David didn’t look back at the sliding doors. He was focused on the sound. Skree-thud. Skree-thud. Fifty yards ahead, the old man—Frank—was a study […]
CHAPTER 1: The Frayed Cuff The Cedar Hollow range was a cathedral of noise, but it was a clumsy, dissonant sort of worship. Every Saturday, the air filled with the sharp, metallic snap of gunpowder and the erratic, high-frequency chatter of young men desperate to prove they existed in high definition. Earl Dawson sat on […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF A GHOST The air in the hospital ward was stagnant, smelling of sterile plastic and the metallic tang of dried blood. Carter sat on the edge of the cot, her left side screaming in protest as she moved to adjust her sling. The light from the hallway, thin and clinical, […]
