CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF THE LECTERN Tyler waited until the heavy double doors of the Fayetteville Recreation Center clicked shut, sealing out the hum of the hallway. He liked the silence. It was a clean, controlled environment—a variable he could manage. He tapped the laser pointer against his palm, the rhythmic thwack-thwack acting as […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF THE WOOD The scent of Pine Crest Sportsman’s Park was a cocktail of damp pine needles, ozone, and the distinct, metallic tang of carbon fiber—a scent that had not existed when Harold Briggs first learned to draw a string. He kept his gaze fixed on the registration table, his pulse […]
CHAPTER 1: The Weight of Silence The room smelled of floor wax and expensive cologne. It was a space designed for order, for the crisp, predictable alignment of stars and stripes, where respect was measured in the crispness of a salute and the uniformity of a stance. Dutch Harrison sat in the third row, his […]
CHAPTER 1: THE THRESHOLD OF COUNTY SIX The morning air in Brainerd held that specific, biting clarity of late October—the kind that turned your breath into a ghost before it vanished against the frost.
